Art by the g8 Artists Group

work by maureen cooper

Current work relates to the 2 year "Timescape" project based at Calke Abbey Park. My main inspiration is the limeyards area which today shows the power of nature to regenerate where limestone rock had for many years been quarried and burnt in a thriving local industry. My interest in the landscape arises not just from a particular view, or point in time, but from memories of change and a knowledge of its history. This year I have searched for ways to represent creatively the shapes and patterns that link the present and the past, the marks of time and the particular nature of the environment that now exists there: the limekilns, tunnels, arches and old quarries, now pools of water reflecting trees and sky. The “Traces” exhibition in August will also include monoprints based on photographs of Billy Dexter who once worked in the lime and brickyards.
